Trained at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, he completed his residency at the Hospital for Joint Diseases, NYU Langone, and was fellowship-trained at the world-renowned Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic. Before medicine, Dr. Powell was a founding member of Sha Na Na, performing at Woodstock in 1969 and appearing in Grease and Caddyshack. The band played roughly 250 shows a year across four continents, and its television show aired in more than 35 countries.
