Dr. Powell Returns to Kenya

March 8, 2011

Dr. Powell returned to Nairobi, Kenya for a week in February, joined by Operation Arthroscopy colleagues Drs. Richard Gayle and Guillem Lomas. The doctors started work on Monday morning in the clinic and began surgeries later that day. Performing 21 surgeries in 3 days, they treated patients from Kenya while one patient came from neighboring Tanzania to have arthroscopic shoulder surgery. On Friday, the doctors presented lectures and a knot-tying lab for 25 Kenyan orthopedic surgeons and residents. A Friday night dinner at Carnivore, the world famous game restaurant in Nairobi, rounded out the week, and then on to the airport Friday night for the return flight home.

Mater Hospital in Nairobi contributed the surgical suites and anesthesiologists. The surgeries were made possible by generous donations of tools and implants from Smith and Nephew, Arthrocare, Providence St. Joseph and the Motion Picture Hospital.

Dr. BoxrudCynthia Boxrud, Dr. Powell’s wife, performed eye surgery at the Kikuyu Eye Clinic west of Nairobi while his children volunteered at the Cura Orphanage west of Nairobi where children have lost their parents to HIV infection.
